Common questions
What is the difference between preferential and non preferential origin?
A non preferential certificate simply states where the goods were made. A preferential certificate lets your buyer claim reduced or zero duty under a trade agreement between India and their country. The preferential route is worth real money to the buyer, which is why they usually ask for it specifically.
Which one do I need?
Whatever your buyer or their customs authority requires, and it depends on the destination and whether a trade agreement applies. Ask the buyer before you ship. Issuing the wrong type means reissuing it, and the goods may already be in transit by then.
Can I get one after the goods have shipped?
Retrospective issuance is possible in some cases but it is not guaranteed and it is not fast. Some buyers will not accept a retrospectively issued certificate at all. Apply before shipment.
Does every shipment need its own certificate?
Yes. A certificate of origin is tied to a specific consignment. It is not an annual registration you file once.
Why do certificates get rejected?
Details that do not reconcile against the invoice and packing list. Quantity, value, description or HS code differing between documents is the usual cause. The certificate has to match the rest of the document set exactly.
